Compensation: $22 per hour
Hours: Flexible, approximately 10-20 hours per week. Some evenings and weekends will be required for outreach events.
Location: Hybrid (Bay Area-based with some in-person community events). At least one in person day/week in our office in Oakland.

About this Opportunity:
Greenbelt Alliance is seeking a passionate and dedicated Climate Justice and Engagement Fellow to support our efforts in developing and implementing engagement strategies that center frontline communities in decision making processes related to environmental justice, climate resilience, and sea level rise planning. This position is ideal for an early-career professional, recent graduate, or community leader interested in environmental policy, grassroots organizing, and advocacy. The fellow would work on ongoing community engagement efforts in Alameda, Oakland, and regionally.
Key Responsibilities
- Community Engagement & Outreach
- Oakland and Alameda Sea Level Rise: Build relationships with community members, advocacy groups, and local organizations to promote the on going sea level rise work happening in Alameda and Oakland
- Table at community events and support community workshops to gather input and foster dialogue on sea level rise in vulnerable communities like East Oakland and the Canal District in San Rafael
- Develop culturally-appropriate outreach materials, including fact sheets, social media content, and newsletters.
- Environmental Justice & Policy Support
- Conduct research on environmental justice issues, including sea level rise and housing development across the East Bay.
- Assist in policy analysis and advocacy efforts related to climate adaptation and land-use planning. This could involve reviewing General Plans, Climate Action Plans and Sea Level Rise plans.
- Track relevant local policies affecting frontline communities across the East Bay as needed.
- Program & Project Support
- Support with related outreach activities (preparing event flyers, writing a press release, contributing to multimedia communications around sea level rise and other climate issues affecting East Bay communities).
Qualifications & Skills
- Passion for community engagement, climate resilience, and sea level rise preparedness.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse communities.
- Experience in community organizing, outreach, or advocacy (volunteer or professional experience welcomed).
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to have a flexible work schedule (some weekends and evenings will be needed for events)
- Proficiency in Google Suite, Canva, and social media platforms is a plus.
- Fluency in a second language (such as Spanish, Mandarin or Cantonese) is a plus.
