In a disappointing 2-3 vote, the Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO) of Napa County approved a proposal to expand the City of American Canyon’s Sphere of Influence to include 157 acres of agricultural-zoned lands along the Napa River.
Over 250 people signed our petition and sign-on letter asking LAFCO to refuse this proposal and preserve the agricultural-zoned area, which includes a vital wetland ecosystem, home to endangered species, and a buffer against flooding and sea level rise. Over 80% of Bay Area wetlands have already been lost. Read our letter here.
This decision paves the way for potential future development. The item was discussed at a meeting on Apr 7, 2025 (more Information available here.)
In 2022, voters already chose to protect this piece of land and not expand its Urban Limit Line when they defeated American Canyon’s Measure J . This move reflects a growing trend among cities around the Bay to bypass the regular process for rezoning unincorporated land through annexation.
