October’s Volunteer of the Month, Elizabeth Beaubois, has been interning in our San Jose office since the beginning of summer and continues to be an asset to our South Bay team. Through the summer, her main responsibility was spearheading PARK(ing) Day in downtown San Jose.
PARK(ing) Day is an international grassroots event for artists, advocates, and citizens to temporarily transform on-street parking spaces into urban parks. Elizabeth was successful in increasing the number of San Jose groups adopting ‘urban parks’ from one in 2009 to five this past September. Her good nature and resourcefulness were helpful in working out logistics with the City of San Jose, and her design skills came in handy when creating Greenbelt Alliance’s parking spot. Check out photos of our spot on Flickr!
Elizabeth is in the process of wrapping up a Master’s Degree in Urban and Regional Planning at San Jose State University. She will continue to intern with Greenbelt Alliance as she tackles her thesis measuring how accessible fresh food, transit and shops are by foot from affordable rental homes in San Mateo County.
