Win: Tiburon and Belvedere Vote Yes on Measure M

Update: We are thrilled that the residents of Tiburon and Belvedere have passed Measure M to protect the only major parcel of open space land remaining on the Tiburon Peninsula, the Martha Property!

Greenbelt Alliance encouraged Tiburon and Belvedere residents to vote yes on Measure M to protect the 110-acre property. The property is currently privately owned and is actively being threatened by development. By protecting this land and maintaining it as parks and open spaces, we can ensure its natural lands are preserved for future generations to enjoy.

Passing Measure M not only protects this valuable and pristine open space but also reduces the risk of fire to local communities and prevents further traffic congestion within the community. Additionally, it ensures that we preserve this land for wildlife habitat.

Why We Supported Measure M

In Greenbelt Alliance’s latest version of At Risk, the Bay Area Greenbelt report, we highlighted the importance of protecting this critical open space land from sprawl development. Home to a rare population of threatened Marin dwarf flax, this fragile hillside is prone to mudslides. Among its natural benefits and challenges, it’s also the last key piece in a system of lands stretching from Angel Island to the historic coast, up through forests to these windswept grasslands. Now that the land is protected, Tiburon Open Space Committee hopes to join these lands to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, to bring this world-class scenery to the world.

We must protect open spaces, natural areas, and wildlife habitats like this from encroachment and urban sprawl. Rather than developing these areas, we need to focus on climate-smart growth near jobs, services, and transit. By conserving these lands we can also protect the water quality of the estuary and the Bay, which are imperative to our ecosystem. Additionally, the Bay Area’s fire season has not only increased in severity but length, making it important to support measures that help reduce fire risk within our communities, which Measure M does by preventing development where fire risk is higher and where natural lands can serve as buffers in the event fire strikes.
