Update: The residents of Oakland have passed Measure V to update the City’s Just Cause Ordinance to extend eviction protections!
Greenbelt Alliance encouraged Oakland residents to vote yes on Measure V, which will update the City of Oakland’s Just Cause Ordinance originally approved by voters in 2002 (Measure EE). Specifically, the measure will extend eviction protections to tenants who live in RVs and newly constructed units (except ADUs) for the first ten years after a new apartment is built. Measure V would also prohibit most no-fault evictions affecting children and Oakland Unified School District employees during the school year.
Why We Supported Measure V
Historic inflation levels, the end of COVID-19 tenant protections, and a red-hot real estate market continue to impact Oakland’s most disadvantaged communities with increasing housing costs. A study by UC Berkeley’s Terner Center noted that among the San Francisco Bay Area’s outmigration, low-income people are over-represented and in that group, people of color are over-represented. This outmigration not only has a devastating impact on equity but also on the environment. As people are forced out of the city where they do things like work and go to school, their long commutes increase greenhouse gas emissions, with some people driving as far as Merced. Measure V will help address the housing and climate crises!
