Update: The citizens of Winters voted yes on Measure A, establishing a new Urban Growth Boundary for their city, which will protect their natural and agricultural lands from sprawling subdivisions.
Greenbelt Alliance endorsed Measure A to support the committed group of Winters residents who gathered sufficient signatures to place the citizens’ initiative to establish a new voter-backed Urban Growth Boundary on the ballot. The Keep Winters Winters citizens group persevered to safely qualify the measure during the pandemic. They then worked closely with the City Council to finalize the Winters Urban Growth Boundary and Community-Based Planning Initiative for the November 3, 2020, General Election.
The grassroots group started work in 2019 when friends and neighbors learned that the City was in talks with a developer who wanted to convert farmlands to sprawling subdivisions which would effectively double the size of Winters and double the population.
While Winters is on the far edge of the Bay Area, Greenbelt Alliance believes Winters is exactly the kind of place where we want to support protecting open space, preventing sprawl, and encouraging climate SMART communities for the next generation. Others around the state, such as Solvang and Watsonville, have looked to us for support and advice on Urban Growth Boundaries, even when we can’t be there on the ground side-by-side.
