A New Vision for Santa Clara’s El Camino Real

Last week, the community organization Santa Clara Community Advocates (SCCA) introduced its shared vision for the future of El Camino Real (ECR).

SCCA’s policy proposal envisions El Camino Real as a vibrant corridor with community gathering spaces, full of restaurants, shops, and homes. The ECR has great potential to thrive as an inclusive and sustainable area, with at least 5,550 new homes, with 20% ensured to be affordable to lower and moderate-income families.

As the number of jobs in Santa Clara continues to grow, it is important that residents live near where they work, and have multiple transit options, such as safe bike routes and access to public transit. The style of development that makes this possible is known as smart growth. Careful planning and development like this are some of the most important tools in the fight for cities and towns that are welcoming to residents across the income spectrum.

SCCA has partnered with Stanford’s Our Voice Initiative to lead walking tours along El Camino Real in March and April. These walking tours give Santa Clara residents a chance to join the conversation on the future of El Camino Real. Find out more about how you can share your own vision for this important corridor and sign up for a walking tour here.

If you live in Santa Clara and want to join the effort to shape the future of El Camino Real, follow the Santa Clara Community Advocates on Facebook. If you have any questions or would like to learn more about our work in the South Bay, please contact email South Bay Regional Representative Kiyomi Honda Yamamoto.

SCCA is a community organization led by Santa Clara residents, with support from Greenbelt Alliance, SV@Home, Silicon Valley Leadership Group, and Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition.
