Measure A1 will raise $580 million for affordable homes across Alameda County. It’s a critical step toward ensuring that all residents of Alameda County can afford to live, work, and stay here for generations to come.
Housing affordability is an urgent concern across the Bay Area, extracting a heavy financial and emotional toll on millions of the region’s residents. In Alameda County, median home prices have nearly doubled since 2010; the average rent for a two-bedroom apartment is $2,200 per month; and at least 5,000 people are currently homeless.
The high cost of housing is also a problem for the future of our natural and agricultural lands. When people are no longer able to afford to live in communities near jobs and transit, they often move to less-expensive neighborhoods at the edges of the region and beyond. This can create new sprawl pressure in these edge communities, threatening the greenbelt lands that benefit us all.
The smart choice is to provide homes for people across the income spectrum within our cities and towns, close to jobs and transit, creating great walkable neighborhoods for everyone. Greenbelt Alliance is proud to be working with many partner organizations on solutions to get affordable homes built in these locations—where they’re needed badly.
We’re excited to support Measure A1 in Alameda County, which raises $580 million to help build and rehabilitate affordable homes in our existing cities and towns. The measure emphasizes creating affordable options for those most in need, including seniors, the disabled, veterans, low-income families, and homeless.
Measure A1 is supported by a wide array of organizations representing social equity, environmental, health, business, and labor concerns. It requires a two-thirds majority vote to pass.
Greenbelt Alliance urges everyone in Alameda County to vote YES on Measure A1.
