Making a better Broadway in Oakland

Over the last few years, Greenbelt Alliance and our Better Broadway Coalition partners—East Bay Housing Organizations, Walk Oakland Bike Oakland, the Alameda Labor Council, the Sierra Club, Satellite Housing, Urban Habitat, the California Nurses Association, the League of Conservation Voters of the East Bay, the Asian Pacific Environmental Network, the Building and Construction Trades Council of Alameda County, TransForm, and ULTRA Oakland—have been working on a vision to make the Broadway-Valdez District in Oakland a complete, walkable, transit-friendly, and sustainable neighborhood.

The City of Oakland is currently in the process of drafting the Broadway-Valdez District Specific Plan, which include the long-term goals and policies for revitalization in the area. We have played a pivotal role in helping shape that plan by collaborating closely with city staff over the past several months.

The Better Broadway Coalition envisions a neighborhood with:

  • Thriving businesses and storefronts
  • Homes that are affordable
  • Reasonable parking policies
  • Quality jobs for Oakland residents
  • Pedestrian-friendly streets
  • Green building and infrastructure
  • Alternative options for transportation
  • Adaptive reuse of existing buildings

This fall, Greenbelt Alliance and our partners will continue to work with local leaders and residents to move our vision forward. We expect the Draft Specific Plan to be released in mid-to-late September. Following the release, the City of Oakland will host a community workshop, as well as subsequent planning commission hearings, to get feedback from the public. Stay tuned for updates…

We look forward to engaging you with these vital stages of the planning process and ensuring that the process results in a plan for a better Broadway.
