May 25, 2006 Report details sprawl's threat to Bay area open space SAN FRANCISCO A new study is warning that a big chunk of what is now open land in the Bay Area could be swallowed up by development in the next three decades. A survey by the Greenbelt Alliance says more than 400-thousand acres of open space could be developed in the next 30 years unless local governments pass stricter laws regulating sprawl. Developers criticized the findings, saying that more land is needed to meet demand for a growing population. They argue that growth restrictions already in place are limiting supply and driving housing prices beyond what many buyers can pay. Copyright 2006 Associated Press. ### |
