November 9, 2005 Split Verdicts
on Development in the East Bay and Voters in Contra Costa and Alameda Counties delivered split verdicts on 4 measures to expand city limits and allow for development. In Livermore, voters gave a resounding 72% no to a proposal by LA-based Pardee Homes to build more than 2,400 new houses on 1,500 acres on land north of the city. Opponents included the majority of the Livermore City Council and environmentalists. They said the project would have swallowed open space, promoted suburban sprawl, harmed sensitive habitat and clogged traffic on one of the Bay Area's most congested freeways.
