Greenbelt Alliance In the News
December 30, 2005 2005: The biggest stories of the year in San Mateo County Bay Meadows nears finish line The San Mateo City Council on Nov. 7, 2005, approved the redevelopment of the 71-year-old Bay Meadows Racecourse, ending five years of public review and touching off a referendum effort to overturn its decision. The plan put forward by the tracks owners, the Bay Meadows Land Company, displaces hundreds of track workers but creates what many deem a massive public benefit: approximately 1,250 new residences, including 15 percent for lower-income people, 1.25 million square feet of office space, retail shops along an extended Delaware Street and 15 acres of parks. The plan has a powerful and broad range of supporters, including the City Council, the Sierra Club, organized labor and the Greenbelt Alliance. Opponents of the plan, including the Friends of Bay Meadows citizen group,
fought to preserve the track, attempting to get it listed as a historic
property and gathering signatures on a petition to place the project on
the ballot. The referendum effort failed this week, however, and the demolition
of the track now appears a near-certainty. ### |
