Volume 2, March 2003
Greenbelt Alliance announces the debut of the Greenbelt Wonders and Neighborhood Wanders guide to some of the Bay Area's most treasured open spaces and communities. This innovative guide not only showcases some of the Bay Area's most beautiful spots, but also tells the cultural and land use histories of each place to help hikers appreciate how the land around them became a protected park, productive agricultural area, or vibrant community.
Many of the Bay Area's most beloved placesfrom the peak of Angel Island to the rolling hills of Black Diamond Mines preserveare protected thanks to ordinary residents who made an effort to preserve open space and promote better land use. Parts of our own neighborhoods are great examples of smart growth: they're pedestrian-friendly with lively streets and shops, and close to parks. This guide lends an extra dimension to every hike because it brings the land's history to life and highlights issues that could affect its future. The Wonders and Wanders hiking guide offers everyone, from the occasional walker to the ardent outdoor enthusiast, a new and deeper way to see the land.
