Alliance Origins: Early Success Stories
2003 marks the forty-fifth anniversary of Greenbelt Alliance's
work to protect open space and promote livable communities. Throughout
this year we will highlight our history in the Newswire. This month we
examine Greenbelt Alliance's early success in protecting coastal lands.

16,500
Acres of Wetlands Protected
If you have ever flown into San Francisco International airport,
you may be familiar with the red and orange squares that dot the shore
from Redwood City to San Jose. The colorful patches are filled with algae
and bacteria, which give them the multicolored hues. Now, much of these
saltponds will be permanently protected.
