Cast Your Vote: Greenbelt and Smart Growth Measures on the Ballot

Greenbelt Alliance * The Newswire
Volume 1, October 2002

On November 5, Bay Area and California residents will vote on a range of ballot measures related to environmental protection, affordable housing, and transportation. Some of these measures will protect the Bay Area greenbelt and promote livable communities, but other measures may have the opposite effect.

At the state level, Proposition 46 is a $2.1 billion bond to fund affordable housing, emergency shelter programs and loan assistance for first-time homebuyers. Greenbelt Alliance endorses Proposition 46 because it will vastly increase affordable housing options in the Bay Area and other urban areas of California. At the local level, Fremont voters will consider Measure T, which seeks to protect the city's undeveloped hills from sprawling development. The measure would maintain existing use of the hills for agriculture, outdoor recreation, very limited residential development, and open space. Greenbelt Alliance endorses Measure T because it establishes needed protection for Fremont's rolling hills, including important habitat, watershed, and recreational lands.
