Discover the beauty and history of the Bay Area with Greenbelt Alliance's
unique "Wonders and Wanders" online hiking guide. This innovative
guide not only showcases some of the Bay Areas most beautiful spots,
but also tells the cultural and land use histories of each place to help
hikers appreciate how the land around them became a protected park, productive
agricultural area, or vibrant community. This guide was made possible
by a grant from REIs Great Place Program.

Alameda
County Berkeley Hills
Follow Strawberry Creek from downtown Berkeley into the scenic hills while
learning about the land use decisions that created Berkeley and its greenbelt.
Contra
Costa County Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve
Choose from two hikes: discover the coal mines that that fueled California's
early growth, or soak in scenic views of beautiful open spaces at risk
of becoming a sprawling housing development.
Marin
County Angel Island
Take in beautiful bay views from the peak named in honor of the woman
who saved Angel Island from development.
Napa
County Mount St. Helena
Ascend this majestic mountain for a bird's eye view of Napa's greenbelt
and livable communities.
San
Francisco County Bayfront Walking Tour
Youll see San Francisco and the bay in a new way after you take
this stroll through history from the Embarcadero to the Golden Gate Bridge.

Mateo County El Corte de Madera Open Space Preserve
Explore the redwoods and unique tafoni sandstone sculpture while learning
about the history of land use and open space protection in the mid-peninsula
region.
Santa
Clara County Almaden Quicksilver Park
History will unfold before your eyes as you walk through rolling hills
once inhabited by thousands of miners but later protected as open space
by local residents and organizations.
Solano
County Rush Ranch
Experience thousands of years of history in a walk that includes a Native
American dwelling, the ranch built by one of Solano's pioneer families,
and an abundance of wildlife in Suisun Marsh's vibrant wetlands.
Sonoma
County Farm Tour or Sugarloaf
Experience the bounty of the Bay Area's farms while learning about the
history of the land, from the Mexican governments initial parcelization
of Sonoma to prevent Russian expansionism to current efforts to protect
agricultural and open space lands in the county; or hike an alternate
route that exposes you to the rolling hills and towering redwoods that
characterize the northern coast.
